Suspects linked to the fatal shootings in Yelwata, Benue State, will face formal charges in court on Monday, according to the Federal Government.
The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice revealed this in a statement sent to reporters on Sunday.
The announcement stated that the accused will appear before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja “after a painstaking investigation and collaboration by government agencies.”
“The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice wishes to send a strong signal to the country’s enemies acting under any disguise by assuring Nigerians that justice will be ensured in this matter.”
Mr. Kamarudeen Ogundele, the AGF’s media assistant, signed the statement, which also stated that “the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to the protection of the lives and property of all, as enshrined in the Constitution.”
According to reports, the violence began late on June 13, 2025, and continued into the early hours of June 14, when suspected armed herders launched coordinated attacks on a Catholic mission, a local market, and residential buildings.
Houses were set on fire, victims were cruelly disfigured, and the assailants and security personnel engaged in gunfire during the assault.
According to reports, over 100 people died and about 3,000 locals were compelled to leave their houses.
Earlier, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu condemned the attack and ordered security and law enforcement organizations to find the perpetrators and bring charges against them.
