Officers recorded in a widely popular stop-and-search video in Lagos have been ordered by Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu to report to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary action.
Aliyu Giwa, the Force Public Relations Officer, revealed the directive on Sunday in a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter).
Giwa claims that the officers engaged in the incident—which is said to have happened in Lagos’ Satellite Town neighborhood have been asked to appear before the authorities on Wednesday in order to respond to inquiries about their behavior.
The action comes after a viral video of officers reportedly harassing individuals during a roadside stop-and-search operation went viral on social media, sparking public outcry.
The officers were shown in the video stopping a car, telling its occupants to get out, and separating one person for a search outside the car.
A person going by the handle @ChuksEricE shared the video, which went viral on Saturday.
According to Giwa, the decision demonstrates the Nigeria Police Force’s dedication to professionalism and accountability.
While performing their jobs, he asked officers to uphold discipline, use moderation, and respect citizens’ rights.
He stated, “The Nigeria Police Force values the public’s concerns, which continue to reinforce our commitment to accountability and professional standards.”
He further reassured Nigerians that the Force is committed to maintaining justice, discipline, and institutional integrity and that the proper consequences will be implemented in accordance with the results of the disciplinary procedure.
