In an interview with Yanga FM Lagos on Monday, March 2, 2026, Nigerian rapper and singer Superboy Cheque opened up about his severe battle with acne and how it nearly derailed his flourishing music career. The “Zoom” crooner shared that his skin struggles reached a peak shortly after he gained mainstream success, a time when he felt immense pressure to maintain a certain image for the cameras. “I struggled with acne years back. It was terrible. My desperation to cure it led me to buy a makeup that almost disfigured my face. It was embarrassing. I almost quit music,” Cheque confessed, explaining that his perfectionist nature made the transition to being a public figure incredibly taxing on his mental health.
The singer detailed a specific incident where his attempt to hide his skin imperfections went horribly wrong after he purchased an unsuitable product from a store. “After my breakthrough song ‘Zoom’ and I got signed by a record label, it dawned on me that I would be attending interviews and would be in front of cameras… I woke up one morning and realised that my whole face has been damaged,” he recalled.
This physical toll got him into a deep loss of self-confidence, affecting his social life to the point where he felt unable to approach women or comfortably engage with the media. The trauma was so significant that it became the creative catalyst for his 2021 hit collaboration with Fireboy DML, “History,” a song that explores personal struggles and the journey of overcoming past obstacles.
Beyond the aesthetic concerns, Cheque emphasized that the experience forced him to confront his insecurities head-on as he navigated his rise in the music industry. He noted that the constant presence of cameras and the expectations of fame made the healing process even more public and difficult.
“I am a perfectionist,” he reiterated, highlighting how the pressure to appear flawless almost cost him his passion for music. Now that he has overcome that phase, his story serves as a reminder of the private battles many artists face behind the scenes of their public success.
