President Bola Tinubu has formally decorated Tunji Disu with his new rank as the Acting Inspector-General of Police during a ceremony at the State House in Abuja on Wednesday, February 25, 2026. The event, which took place at approximately 4:00 p.m. in the President’s office, was attended by top government and security officials, including National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume.
Notably present was the immediate past IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, whose departure paved the way for Disu to become Nigeria’s 23rd police chief. “Lead firmly but fairly, demand professionalism at every level and ensure that the safety of lives and property remains our highest priority,” President Tinubu said while charging the new acting IGP to restore public confidence in the force.

The timing of Tunji Disu’s appointment has sparked significant discussion, as the 59-year-old officer was originally scheduled to retire on April 13, 2026—just 48 days from today. However, the legal landscape surrounding the position has shifted due to the amended Police Act, which grants an Inspector-General a fixed four-year tenure regardless of their age or years of service.
This means that if his appointment is ratified by the Nigeria Police Council and confirmed by the Senate, Disu could potentially remain at the helm of the Nigeria Police Force until 2030. Tinubu expressed full confidence in the Lagos-born officer, citing his operational depth and previous track record, particularly his rebranding of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos. “I made this decision for you to assume this responsibility. I know your record. I saw the dedication you exhibited while you were in Lagos when I was governor,” the president added.
