The wife of the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Foluke Adeboye, recalls the “drastic personal sacrifice” she made during the early years of her faith in a moving meditation on the personal expenses of her spiritual path.
The Mummy GO revealed how her conversion to Christianity in the 1970s resulted in a total renunciation of her prior lifestyle in an uncovered video that is presently doing the rounds on Nigerian social media on Thursday, March 19, 2026.
Prior to being “born again,” she disclosed that she had a strong interest in high fashion and held a sizable collection of gold jewelry, some of which she had previously chosen for her toddler.
But when she joined the RCCG at a time when wearing such ornaments was severely forbidden as taboo, she felt compelled to break her connection to material luxury.
The cleric’s wife revealed that she threw all of her gold collection into the Lagos Lagoon instead of passing it on or selling the items for a profit. Her social circle at the time was perplexed by this act of “holy defiance” against materialism, and a family friend said she should have at least left the jewelry to her mother to sell. Pastor Foluke took a strong moral stand and rejected this compromise, saying, “Whatever is not good for me is not good for my mother.”
She acknowledged that in the immediate wake of this change, she momentarily substituted pricey copper accessories before fully adopting the understated style that has subsequently shaped her public persona for many years. She claimed that she had never looked back with nostalgia despite the substantial monetary value of the things lost to the sea, saying, “What would I say I miss? Not much; I have already sold myself.”
