The Edo State Government has issued an order for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the students involved in a troubling, widely viral bullying video at Igbinedion Secondary School.
The order was given on Monday, March 16, 2026, in response to an atrocious video that went viral over the weekend and showed a vicious attack on a helpless student. A fellow student who had fallen to the ground was repeatedly attacked by two male students in the video, which caused a national uproar. One of the attackers dragged the victim by his uniform and stomped on his head and chest. The harshness of the incident led the state’s administration to announce a zero-tolerance policy toward such “reckless behavior” in any educational institution throughout the state, despite the fact that a third student was heard asking for the violence to stop.
In an interview with Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Edo State Commissioner for Information Kassim Afegbua gave an official update on the government’s response, confirming that the state’s security apparatus is fully operational. According to Afegbua, the Commissioner of Police has called the accused and their parents to the state command after identifying three students as the main participants in the incident. “Three students were involved in the incident, and the Commissioner of Police has asked that the parents and the students report to the command. They will definitely face prosecution. Even though they are minors, there are juvenile correctional centres where they can be kept if the courts make a pronouncement regarding prosecution,” The commissioner said.
Monday Okpebholo, the Executive Governor of Edo State, has shown personal interest in the issue and instructed the State Police Command to carry out a comprehensive examination of Igbinedion Secondary School’s general conduct and safety procedures in addition to filing charges. The government has established a five-person investigative team tasked with obtaining testimony and examining the case’s wider ramifications in order to guarantee a comprehensive and transparent investigation.
“People are already coming forward with additional information about similar incidents that we were not previously aware of. This suggests that there may be more to it than meets the eye,” Afegbua said, pointing out that the public response has already produced fresh leads. This implies that there might be more to it than first appears. The government’s position serves as a firm reminder to Benin City parents and school administrators that every child’s safety is a top priority that the state is willing to uphold with the full force of the law as the committee gets to work.
