Joan Laporta, the president of Barcelona, has opened up about his thoughts on Lionel Messi leaving the team in 2021.
He claimed that because of the club’s financial struggles at the time, he was correct to let the renowned player go. Messi is frequently regarded as the best player in Blaugrana history. However, due to the club’s financial limitations and La Liga’s salary requirements, he was forced to leave in 2021.
After that, he joined Paris Saint-Germain, but two years later, he moved to Inter Miami. Laporta gave Marca the following explanation for his decision to split from the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner. In his words, “I had to make a decision, and I believe it was the correct one; the outcomes are evident.
“We managed to restore the club’s financial health, assembled a competitive team, and it was time for a generational shift.
“Leo was nearing the end of his career, and we needed to build a new team. Would I have preferred to create a new team with Leo’s assistance? Yes. We attempted that, but it was not feasible.”
Although there were rumors that Lionel Messi would return to Barcelona in 2023, he ultimately decided to sign with Inter Miami.
