Rep Mascot Ikwechegh Resigns As Party Crisis Deepens

by admin

Mascot Ikwechegh, the House of Representatives member representing the Aba North and Aba South Federal Constituency, has officially left APGA. The lawmaker submitted his formal resignation letter to the party’s chairman in Eziama Ward 1, Aba North Local Government Area, on Saturday, February 28, 2026. While Ikwechegh expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunity to serve, he did not immediately disclose which political platform he intends to join. “This is a decision that has come with a lot of consequences,” he said in recent discussions, adding that while he remains grateful for the APGA platform, the current political climate necessitates a realignment to better serve his constituents.

The resignation follows a significant series of internal instability within the party’s Abia State chapter. Just days prior to Ikwechegh’s exit, a mass resignation occurred where all local government executives and ward officials in Aba North and Aba South stepped down from their positions in a show of loyalty to the lawmaker.

This mass exodus has effectively gutted the party’s grassroots structure in Abia’s commercial hub. Some suggest that the move may be a prelude to Ikwechegh joining the APC or aligning with Governor Alex Otti’s administration, especially following reports of a recent high-level meeting between the him and President Bola Tinubu.

With Ikwechegh’s departure, APGA has lost its final sitting federal lawmaker from Abia State. This follows the December 2025 resignation of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who left the party to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the wake of Peter Obi’s own political shifts. Despite the loss, Abia State APGA Chairman Sunday Onukwubiri maintained a defiant stance, stating that the party remains “formidable and strong” despite the high-profile exits. “It is bad that people throw away the ladder they used in climbing up to prominence, but I can assure you that APGA will remain stronger and more united in Abia,” Onukwubiri stated, insisting that the party will not regret the departure of those who choose to leave.
