George Weah Condemns CAF for Stripping Senegal of AFCON Title

by admin

Following the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) decision to reject Senegal the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title, African great and former Liberian President George Weah made a harsh criticism of the CAF.

The 1995 Ballon d’Or winner called the decision a “travesty” and a “slippery slope” that jeopardizes the fundamental integrity of the sport in a thorough statement issued on March 18, 2026. Weah’s action comes after the CAF Appeals Board reversed Senegal’s 1-0 victory over Morocco in extra time, giving the Atlas Lions a 3-0 forfeit victory due to a brief walk-off protest during the final, which took place in Rabat on January 18, 2026.

The dispute revolves around a violent moment during stoppage time when Senegal’s players momentarily left the field to protest a penalty that Morocco had been given.

The CAF determined that the action violated Articles 82 and 84 of the AFCON regulations on refusal to play, even though they returned after 17 minutes and finished the match. However, Weah contended hat the referee is still the ultimate authority on the field. “In football, the Laws of the Game are clear: the referee on the pitch is the final authority on decisions made during the match. Once play is allowed to continue and the match is completed, the result obtained on the field must stand,” Weah said.

Additionally, he pointed out that the referee’s official report classified the occurrence as a “stoppage” rather than a “forfeiture,” therefore CAF’s administrative reversal directly contradicted match-day facts.

Weah cautioned that permitting committee members to overrule on-field outcomes creates a risky precedent in which games are decided in boardrooms as opposed to on the field. “Football must be decided on the pitch, not re-decided after the final whistle,” he underlined, calling the decision a flaw that has “scarred and blemished African football.”

The football legend also used this medium to debunk fallacious claims on social media that he agreed with the ruling and to call on the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to step in right away. Weah’s passionate backing has inspired the “Teranga Lions” and their supporters, who continue to insist that their triumph in Rabat was earned justly via “sporting performance,” as Senegal prepares its formal appeal to CAS.
